Supposedly this was a well designed food processor that can do many things: dice, puree, chop. It has a large bowl, nice blade and a safe, functional shoot to insert the food. The problem is that the lip that holds the blade only goes up about an inch leaving the next 4 inches of the container unusable. This thing isn't supposed to make soup? What? When you take almost any food and blend it, what happens? It becomes soupy. Most food has water in it: fruits, veggies and when you chop them they are going to liquify. Even if you are only wanting to dice instead of liquify, suppose you want to make some bread crumbs. Guess what, the bread crumbs more than an inch high still fall through the hole. They do so at a slower rate than pure soup but still. The illusion that this thing can work with no more than a quarter of what it the volume of its design appears to indicate is continually frustrating to use.

There are a number of things retarted around this invention. #1: How do you carry it to your seat? Well, you probably have to hold the saucer not the cup, so now you have to worry about the cup sliding off the saucer. Sure there is a ridge to hold the cup in place and you would have to tilt it pretty far for the cup to slide off, but some of us have some shakes, you know? Ok so you can hold it by the saucer but now your coffee balancing skills are a little off, I'm not sure why, but if the cup is filled high you are more likely to spill it if you try to balance it on a plate compared to hold the cup in your hand. Fine, so carrying it to your table was a little nerve racking, but you made it back ok only spilling a few drops into the saucer. But your coffee is hot and you did fill it up high and you want to taste it so you try to pick the thing up with the little handle and...the thing is heavy. You are trying to pick up this heavy thing with a dainty little finger hole on the side and well your finger hurts. Your finger hurts but your thumb still has to push down harder because your finger grip is getting weak. You are worried about the hole thing just rolling forward around your finger, you try to brace the thing more with pressure from your ring finger below. Before you've had a sip you've spilt a little more and have gotten the shakes: drinking coffee like this is really stressful.

I'm able to construct all the molecular configurations for a chain of a given length. This is the problem I had for the take home part of my graduate qualifying exam (some 10 years ago!?). I didn't yet solve the problem of unique structures (accounting for rotations and translations), but that seems like an easier but more tedious problem.

Since founding the Gap in 1969, Fisher and his wife Doris began collecting contemporary Western art. In 1993, ARTnews Magazine declared Fisher one of the top ten art collectors in the world. His collection, largely housed at the Gap headquarters in San Francisco, includes comprehensive, career-spanning works by Andy Warhol, Alexander Calder and Roy Lichtenstein, Ellsworth Kelly, Gerhard Richter, Anselm Kiefer, Chuck Close, and Claes Oldenburg.

On August 8, 2007, Fisher announced plans to build a 100,000-square-foot (9,300 m2) museum in the San Francisco Presidio, tentatively named the Contemporary Art Museum of the Presidio, to house his art collection. The museum, if it had been built, would have been larger than the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA).[3] However, the plan engendered widespread skepticism and even outright antagonism among some historic preservationists in San Francisco.

In July 2009, Fisher announced that he and his wife were abandoning their efforts to build the museum at San Francisco's Presidio, stating "Doris and I will take some time to consider the future of our collection and other possible locations for a museum, which could include other sites within the Presidio and elsewhere." In September 2009, Donald and Doris Fisher decided to enter into a partnership with SFMOMA to display the world famous collection.

One day after the San Francisco Chronicle article on the SFMOMA partnership, the Chronicle reported that Fisher died of cancer at home on Sunday morning, September 27, 2009.

In optics, the f-number (sometimes called focal ratio, f-ratio, f-stop, or relative aperture[1]) of an optical system expresses the diameter of the entrance pupil in terms of the focal length of the lens; in simpler terms, the f-number is the focal length divided by the "effective" aperture diameter. It is a dimensionless number that is a quantitative measure of lens speed, an important concept in photography. The greater the f-number, the less light per unit area reaches the image plane of the system; the amount of light transmitted to the film (or sensor) decreases with the f-number squared. Doubling the f-number increases the necessary exposure time by a factor of four. Depth of field increases with f-number, as illustrated in the image here. This means that photographs taken with a low f-number will tend to have one subject in focus, with the rest of the image out of focus. This is frequently useful for nature photography, portraiture, and certain special effects.

Its pretty cool that flickr provides "exif data" about focal lengths, aperture and exposure time when a photo was taken.

The Clock Tower Building was originally constructed in 1907 for the Max Schmidt Lithograph Corporation, a printing firm that designed and produced the classic California fruit box labels and posters for the Panama Public International Expedition. The concrete, brick, and timber structure was renovated into 127 live/work lofts resulting in a rich variety of unique unit types particularly suited to the emerging lifestyle of home offices and electronic commutes.

As far as art as painting and stuff, for a long time art simply was the copying and the glorification of the universe. Impressionism broke that trend when it said that painting is a human action subject to the interpretation and bias of the painter. A fat lady lying on the grass was as much a glorification of the universe as perfect bodied angels flying around golden clouds. That was the first huge step humans took towards understanding the true meaning of art: that it allowed us to communicate our way of thinking, that it told the story of human beings. All the genre's of art that emerged during the 20th century, surrealism, abstract or cubism, reflected growing number of ways that art can tell us about ourselves. Some art, like Andy Warhol's, remind us of truths that we often overlook, that we are often illogical, ironic and very often filled with bullshit. You and Warhol are making similar observations (as were Andy Kauffman, Charles Bucowski). Gerhardt Richter ties bullshit back into why art is important:

One has to believe in what one is doing, one has to commit oneself inwardly, in order to do painting. Once obsessed, one ultimately carries it to the point of believing that one might change human beings through painting. But if one lacks this passionate commitment, there is nothing left to do. Then it is best to leave it alone. For basically painting is idiocy.

Art is bullshit and art is the most amazing thing humans do and in either case it is our microphone. No matter how much art is created, it can't get played out. Its all we got left.

I've done alot of "close up" photography of 1ft shorebreak, I like to use those images to imagine that the swell could actually be that thick, that chaotic and unusual. To help add to this perspective, I started drawing tiny surfers on the waves, the following images are some of my better work. Brutalist architecture is a style of architecture which flourished from the 1950s to the mid 1970s, spawned from the modernist architectural movement. The English architects Alison and Peter Smithson coined the term in 1954, from the French béton brut, or "raw concrete", a phrase used by Le Corbusier to describe the poured board-marked concrete with which he constructed many of his post WWII buildings. One of the best example of brutalist architecture is shown in the image of the Robarts Library at the University of Toronto.

345 California Center, known also as 345 California Street and locally known as the Tweezer Towers, is a 48 story, 695 ft. (212 m) office tower located in the heart of San Francisco's financial district made by Skidmore, Owings and Merill. Completed in 1986, it is San Francisco's third-tallest building after the Transamerica Pyramid and 555 California Street, but only the Tweezers of the building poke above the rest of the downtown skyscrapers.[2] 345 California was originally proposed to stand 100 feet (30 m) taller for a total of 794 ft (242 m).[1] Nevertheless, it is the tallest building constructed in San Francisco in the 1980s.[2]

The tower itself is located in the middle of a block with four historic buildings on each of the four corners. The Mandarin Oriental Hotel occupies the top 11 floors of the tower, consisting of twin towers twisted at 45 degree angles (compared to the rest of the building) and the two are connected by skybridges.[2] These glassy skybridges offer dramatic views from the Financial District of the Bay Area.
